UPDATE 6/30/09 - Burr-dog is now 60+ pounds and still growing! He's taller than Lily, but still has a lot of filling out yet to do. Tennis balls are his absolute favorite thing in the world and he badgers people into playing with him nearly all day (and night) long. It's just so hard to say no when he tosses (yes literally TOSSES, we like to accompany it to the sound "patooey!") the ball into your lap while you're sitting on the couch. His favorite ones are those that squeak. He'll chase and retrieve them anywhere: through the yard, in the house, even in the water! Speaking of which, he LOVES to go swimming!!! When he's played enough ball he'll go over to the brook and lay down in it, with the tennis ball still in him mouth. It's pretty hilarious! Although, loving the water has its drawbacks; we have lost several dozen tennis balls to the brook and no doubt will continue to have them float away as dropping them into the fastest current he can find is one of Burton's favorite pastimes...
Still the best puppy ever, we just wish that his brothers and sisters would update so we can hear how they are doing!!!

UPDATE 3/30/09 - Burton is 20 weeks old today(and probably weighs almost 45 pounds now)! He continues to joyously romp and tussle with Lily all day long and is thrilled that we spend most of our days outside now--hiking, making new gardens, waking up old ones, going for walks in the valley, chasing beloved sticks, frisbees, and balls...
We started obedience classes about three weeks ago; Lily signed up too, just for good measure. Wednesdays from 7-8pm we strut our stuff at Bow-wow University with Lynn Whittaker. Burton had learned the commands at home from us already, but it can sometimes be a challenge for he, and Lily, to focus when there are so many other dogs around. That's the benefit to obedience class that we've had so far; working with Lily and Burton in a social scene. I have to say though, the two of them are probably the best behaved dogs in the class, even though Lily barks a bit, they are much more responsive, calm, and collected than about 93% of the other canines in the class.
Come, sit, down, jump, stay, you're free, lets go, leave it, get the kitty, bring it back, go outside/inside, off, ____ is here, kennel, kibbles, go pee/poo... are all parts of Burton's daily vocabulary that he responds to willingly and with endless enthusiasm. If there is ever any hesitation, he's more than ready to be bribed with some of Lily's kibble or a peanut. This pup loves and will do anything for food. (Except get his nailed clipped, he HATES having his nails clipped!) House training is at a 99.999%, maybe one accident every three days or if he wakes up from a nap in the evening and we don't get him outside fast enough. He only wakes up about 2 or 3 times a night to go outside but otherwise sleeps right through in his crate and comes into bed with us in the morning.
One thing is for sure though, Burton is completely in love with his Lily. He is also just about as big as she is now and can keep up with her when running for short distances. He follows her everywhere and is very obviously imprinting on a great many of her behaviors (something we were hoping would happen!) They are the best of friends and he is her true puppy sidekick.
People who see Burton say, almost with out fail, "what kind of dog is that!?". When we respond "boxer-collie-shar pei" the reaction is almost always "ya, I can really see the shar pei in his face!". It's interesting though, despite the fact that "collie" was higher in the DNA test results than both boxer and shar pei, he looks the least collie out of the three. But he really is a purebred mutt, factoring in all of Bahama Mama's DNA results too. We're still excited to see what adult Burr-dog will end up looking like though. The mass consensus so far is "BIG". The second thing generally commented on his incredibly docile nature; indeed he is very mellow for an un-neutered 5 month old male puppy. By the way, next month we're scheduling the big snip. We haven't told him yet and hopefully his growth will have slowed down enough that there won't be any negative effects later on down the road.
Burton Dharma is still the best puppy we could have ever asked for and has seamlessly fit in with our family, our routine, and our lifestyle.

UPDATE 2/28/09 - Burton had his second puppy check-up at the vet's this past
Monday and he has almost doubled in size since we got him! He weighed in at a
hefty 28.6 pounds! Dr. Jenn said that he was looking absolutely fantastic. He was
so excited about getting treats and love that he didn't even notice the two shots
that he got, completely oblivious to them.
Burton and Lily continue to grow closer every day, they are such a great pair.
When they are out in public together-meeting kids and other dogs, getting praises
of beauty from the older folks- everyone asks if they are related. They do look an
awful lot alike! As Burton's muzzle continues to darken, he and Lily do look as
though they have some similar relatives- and who really knows that they don't
some decades ago!? The edges of his ears are getting lighter and he is getting a
dark "V" on his forehead- probably the collie in him trying to poke through.
He has mastered sit and jump. Come and down are almost perfect every time,
especically if he's working for a treat. House training is going fantastic as
well-maybe one accident a day at most and that's only if we get too into a project
in the house to get to the door in time. He is becoming better every day on-leash.
The stairs are no problem for him anymore. His dog classes start this coming
week- exciting!
The cat-Beya- and Burton have put aside any reservations about each other aside
and now share the couch with a mutual appreciation for the other one and their
space together. Burton was especically fascinated when we put the cat door in
the window today.
That's one thing about this puppy- he watches EVERYTHING! He is essentially
fearless, but if he has a reservation about a situation, he sits and studies it for a
few moments then jumps right in. The brook in the valley across the road is one
thing that he is completely enthralled with. He stands on the bank and stares at
the water below him. There is little doubt that he will be a champion dog paddler
come this summer.
Right now he's gnawing on a bone. The stuffie and the tennis ball lost his
interest. Rawhide bones have replaced cowtoes as his favorite chew toy. He is
still proving the best puppy we could have ever asked for.

UPDATE 2/18/09 - Blitzen, who is now "Burton", is absolutely the puppy that we
were looking for! On the 3 hour ride back from New Jersey we came up with his
new name, which in its entirety is actually "Burton Dharma". By the end of the
night he was responding to it and by the day after that, he had paper training
down almost perfectly. Currently, we have housetraining almost perfectly as well.
He'll willingly go outside to go, but we still have to watch him to get him outside at
the right time; he doesn't tell us yet.
He loves to sit on the couch and watch rainbows from the crystals in the windows
dance across the floor. If he is feeling particularly ambitious, he'll give them a little
pounce or two.
His big sister, Lily, was a little pessimistic at first, but by the third day they were
sleeping together on the couch. Today, almost 3 weeks later, they are the very
best of friends. She puts him in his place when he gets too pushy and fresh, but
she also plays almost non-stop with him. Burton follows Lily around all day long,
they tussle and tug, trot together through the field across the street for our
multiple daily walks. Rocco, Lily, and Burton love to walk along the stream in the
valley, looking for interesting rocks and playing frisbee in the fields. Burton is
learning a little about frisbee, but he much prefers a tennis ball to chase after. It is
a lot easier for him to let Lily run after the frisbee then try to steal it from her when
she brings it back. Burton really likes the snow, especially when he can gnaw on
a few chunks of ice here and there. Gnawing is really his thing; he absolutely
adores cow toes, he thinks they are just about the best thing in the entire
world, with the exception of the new squeaky toy from Grandma. Burton really likes
Grandma and Grandpa, when he goes to Grandma's house he gets to play with
lots of kitties and her cocker spaniel, Maggie, and get too many cookies. When
Grandpa comes over, he plays (fetch and retrieve is his favorite, he perfected that
on about day 2!) but running through the house is a pretty close second.
Speaking of kitties, the kittie here; Beya, literally scared the poop out of Burton the
first time they met. He honest to goodness saw her sitting on the chair and
squatted on the floor. Burton still isn't quite so sure what to think of Beya, but they
are very friendly to each other and they play as best as a cat can play (lots of
overhead pouncing on unsuspecting victims combined with chasing through the
house type of deal). When the guinea pig squeals, Burton is interested. Other
than that he doesn't really notice him.
Burton goes with us in the car quite a bit. He generally just falls asleep; quite the
comparison to Lily who can't keep her eyes off the windows. He still can't jump in
by himself but he can jump out on his own now.
We are signed up with the Bow-Wow University run by a lady named Lynn (who,
out of a pure example of the 6 degrees of separation, knew Burton's foster mom,
Dee!) and the classes are set to begin the first week in March.
Burton readily responds to a few commands already. Come, lets go, sit, jump, no,
and we started working on down today. He's incredibly polite on a leash for being
a pushy little puppy. We want to get a harness for him so that he can start to learn
to pull Rocco on his skateboard, as Lily has already been doing for several
months now. It'll be something of a mock dog-sled ambition.
The Monday after we got him, we took him to get his second set of puppy shots
and his second deworming. From Thursday to Monday, he gained about 2
pounds. He has easily gained 7-10 pounds since we got him on January 30th.
He has "filled out", gotten some puppy fat on him; our vet had noted that he was
"a little ribby" and I agree. Everyday he looks bigger. His face is getting darker, as
well as a darker stripe down his back. His paws are as big as Lily's are right now
so we're betting that he's going to continue to be a very big boy. His next vet
appointment is on the 23rd, I can't wait to see how much he's grown!
We couldn't have found a more perfect puppy if we had all the time in the world to
search. Burton is exactly the second dog that we were looking for, hands down,
no contest. We start our day scrunched in a little bed with two big dogs in it who
are ready to lick our faces and have puppy snuggles the second we wake up and
we go to bed with two happy, tired dogs in their beds next to ours. It brings to
mind the scene in Charlotte's Web when the ram says to the goose "you are very
lucky" and the goose replies "luck had nothing to do with it; it was good
management and hard work". I'm not sure which situation we fall into, maybe
even both, who knows. But regardless of how it happened, we are so very happy
with having Burton Dharma as the newest member of our family.

1/30/09 - Blitzen has been adopted!

12/30/08 - The Reindeer Gang turned six weeks old yesterday :) and so, it was
time for their first set of shots.  First we had to figure out how to transport them to
the vet-between Liz and I, we only had a Camry available, no SUV lol soooooo
with approximately 65+ pounds of puppies to move, we had our hands full,
literally :)) We managed, using a small crate, a small vari-kennel and Aunt Dee's
arms :))))  The babies were soooooo scared, they literally shook the carriers, but
they made it through their ordeal with flying colors and got clean bills of health
and their first set of puppy shots.   I'm not sure how Aunt Liz is feeling this
morning-she carried a crate full of babies from the car! and her back may be
suffering a bit today.  I am not sure just HOW she managed to do that-a HUGE
thank you to Aunt Liz for all of her help-I could not have done any of this without
her-from start to finish!!

Here is the latest weigh-in:
Cupid    7lbs 6oz
Vixen     7lbs 5oz
Prancer   8lbs 7oz
Dasher    8lbs 5oz
Dancer     7lbs 12oz
Comet     8lbs 8oz
Donner      8lbs 6oz
and the big guy Blitzen   9lbs 4oz

These are WONDERFUL puppies who are already responding to a "shhhhh" or a
"no" and even, occasionally, when I say "come, come, come".   They are getting
so much from their mom who continues to be a wonderful mother, instructing her
brood in just how to be dogs-and how to behave appropriately in the world. She
monitors them and intervenes when it is necessary, letting them know when they
are getting too rough with one another.  It's really amazing to watch her school
these babies and how quickly they learn-and they look to her for guidance. You
can watch them watching HER and reading her signals.  I remain totally
fascinated by it all.  Dogs are truly amazing creatures.

12/22/08 - I got to go visit and play with the Reindeer Gang today... OMG they are
like little doggies now. sweet little baby dogs.  The individual personalities are
coming through.  I'd call them from one end of the whelping box...... calling PUP,
pup, pup, pup, pup.   They come running and drape their paws over one section...
looking for the attention......ADORABLE :)  All just so sweet........... I got to pet
everyone, hold a few, smooch a few.   I got my share of puppy breath for sure.
They are happy and healthy babies.. Their coats feel like a million bucks :))   Liz

12/13/08 - It was time for the pups to have their second scheduled worming, so
we had to do a weigh-in and here are the results lol These little guys really are
growing like weeds.

Dasher: 6lbs 9oz
Dancer 6lbs 9oz
Prancer 6lbs 14oz
Vixen 6lbs 10oz
Comet 6lbs 11oz
Cupid 6lbs even
Donner 7lbs even
and the big guy Blitzen 7lbs 6oz

So they have all gained in the neighborhood of 4 pounds in two weeks :)) They
are all healthy, happy babies. They are really playing now, jawing with one
another and playing tug with the toys. They drag things around the box and roll
around with one another all over the place. They all think that they are chew toys
and chew on each other's ears and tails and feet. They still snuggle all up in a
puppie pile to sleep and make the darned cutest cooing noises while they are
sleeping. Bahama is still the best mom and is now schooling her babies on
appropriate play skills lol

11/29/08 - Today was puppy weigh-in :))  They have to be wormed tomorrow and
it's done by weight-sooooooo, I weighed them.  Here's how they top the scale,
from littlest to biggest:

Cupid (girl) is 2 lbs 4 oz
Dasher (boy) 2 lbs 8oz
Vixen (girl) 2lbs 9oz
Dancer and Donder (boys) 2lbs 11oz
Comet (boy) 2lbs 13oz
Prancer (girl) 2lbs 14oz
and last but certainly not least lol is Blitzen (boy) who weighs in at a hefty 3lbs 6oz
lol This boy does NOT miss a meal :))  If mom gets too far away, he screams and
hollers and wonders around trying to find her, stopping along the way to suck on
a siblings ear or foot or tail or whatever body part he happens to come across in
search of the real thing!  He was the first born and came into the world exercising
his lungs and ready for food! He hasn't stopped since :))) What a cutie pie he is!

They are just so cute-Blitzen's ears are opening and Dasher's eyes are about 1/3
of the way open-just a bit from the inner corners out-they should open up all the
way in another day I bet.  The others won't be far behind.  They are beginning to
test their legs and get up and wobble a bit-one or two are actually taking a couple
of faltering steps.  They will be 14 days old tomorrow and they used to all fit nicely
in a row on mom for meals-now it's a true feeding frenzy, jockeying for the best
seat in the house. Only 4 can comfortably fit without a hassle and when Blitzen
joins the crowd, it's every man (or puppy lol) for him or herself!!  Mama continues
to be the best mom and the sweetest creature EVER!  She takes very good care
of her babies and is really good at it!  I guess that comes, unfortunately, from
experience.  This little girl wins the hearts of everyone who meets her!

I wish you could all come and see them, they are truly wonderful little babies.

11/23/08 - Bahama Mama is the boxer/terrier mix Mother of these 5 boys and 3
girls that were born 11/16/08.  They really are very pretty puppies :))  And they
HAVE doubled in size-they eat every hour, I swear!  There isn't a skinny one in the
bunch I am happy to report lol  I LOVE chubby babies :)))) And Mama, well Mama
has got to be the best Mama dog ever!  She is just the BOMB!!

They really do look like bully of some sort-even Ryan commented on how boxery
their muzzles are right now-and they're full of wrinkles lol  But all they really need
is their momma's temperament and they will be the best pups ever!  I had a friend
stop in to see them today and Mama was so good about it-she watches and
she's cautious but she seems to trust and know that no one is going to hurt her
babies-such a wonderful dog!!!

Individual pictures as soon as their foster Mom gets a chance.  Their tails and
dew claws were done already.  Better get those applications in fast as they will
not be available long!  They will be able to go home the weekend of 1/11/09.
