| UPDATE 12/6/09 - Mabel II loves to be loved and loves to love back. Lots of kisses and wiggles, a real sweetheart. We tried her at home with the run of the place for the first two weeks, but that didn't work out so now she's crated during the day when we're all out of the house. Her obedience training starts next month.
She will counter surf when noone's around, but doesn't beg at the table and removes herself from the dining room for a snooze while we eat. Mabel II wants to be a lap dog and at 45lbs is a bit to handle on your lap, but we've dedicated two chairs in our living room to her and sitting there is an invitation to her to come on up. She's not allowed on the other furniture in the house or the beds and is respectful of that. We're having lots of fun and sharing lots of love. 10/31/09 - I joined my new family today!!!!! Soooooo excited about my new life! 10/28/09 Yaaaaayyyyy! We went for a ride in the car today!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! FM left me at the vets office! She said something about me having to be "fixed". To be quite honest with you.... I didn't think I was broken... I thought I was just perfect. I guess they made me even better than before, which means - you guessed it.... I'm ready to go home!!. So - until you come pick me up, I'll just hang here with my "fur peeps" - we eat in the a.m., sleep during the day, run around in the afternoon, nap a little, eat some more, stare at the snack jar.... then go outside again and run around and then settle in for the night....you know... a dogs life!! (I know, you're all jealous.... because when it's good you cannot beat it!) .. Don't wait too long though, everyone tells me that I'm a sweetie! 10/25/09 - Miss Mabel (we call her Maybelline) is going to stay with us here in NJ for another week, and then on Sunday, catch a ride up to Maine with Sue. I have some long hours coming up, and that is just not fair to Mabel and... Sue apparently has a pup that is bored to tears since Skeeter was adopted, so we asked Mabel if she minded giving Sue a hand entertaining her boy. They will have a blast. Over the past week, Mabel got a clean bill of health from the vet, but has not been spayed yet due to the trip north. That should be taken care of once she gets to Maine. She has made fast friends with both of my dogs and she likes to sleep in the same room as me on a dog bed (she would prefer MY bed though). She snoozes (and snores like a piggy) through the night with no wandering. She has acclimated to the crate during the day without a fuss. She is a tiny girl, but she holds her own. She is not dominant and will roll onto her belly during play, but doesn't back down if challenged a little more than she likes.. seconds later though, she is folding herself in half presenting her backside in a sign of submission. She is very mushy, loves to give kisses and get rubbed all over. She, unlike my two dogs...actually comes when she is called without the bribe of a treat. We've only had one very small accident in the week that she has been here so I think she is - for the most part- housetrained. We will miss her when she goes north - but she has told me... "Listen - that boy Quinn needs me". So... sad as I will be - I must let her go. 10/21/09 - Hi - Mabel here.... I DO NOT HAVE SEPARATION ANXIETY !!! I don't know what she was talking about. I just don't think I like total darkness before I fall asleep. If you leave the lights on just a little bit (with a dimmer) I'm just fine and stay as quiet as a stink bug. I did fine the first night after she let me out of the crate, but I'm not sure housetrained I am, and until I know the rules of where to go and what signals the humans understand, I'll be okay sleeping in the crate. I just love my people here. When they talk to me, I just get so excited I wiggle all over the place... I even start to chase my nub (I'm really flexible) and can catch it. I'm eating well and trying to gain some weght. I like to sleep on the floor during the day and don't find the need to make anyone crazy with silly behavior. There is one girl dog here that is a little loud when we play, so I get loud back to her and then we get broken up... but we're just playing. She likes to let me know she's in charge, and I know that but I'm not going to take any of her "yelling" at me without "yelling' back". When I play with the furry guy here, we just run and chase eachother without too much noise. I like that alot. I also like to chase the soccer ball, and go for walks. I saw some dogs while walking and other than look at them they didn't bother me.I was happy walking with the human, but need to learn not to pull and I did not like the head halter thingy that she had on my nose. I tried to show her how to get it off by diving my head into the grass but she kept stopping me.... silly human! 10/19/09 : Mabel arrived yesterday after having been in a shelter for 9 days. She was apparently found with tags on, but the number was disconnected when called, and despite being on the web, was apparently not claimed. This little girl is a sweetheart. She won over my two boxers immediately, allowing all of the appropriate smelling to occur without any fuss or tussle. She doesn’t like the crate at night. Not one bit. I gave in and allowed her to sleep with my two (each on their own dog bed) and she did fine through the night. She definitely likes people, and is eager to know where I am. She eats like a champ. She rides well in the car and waits to be told she can come out. My two past fosters have been males and they both came with heavy panting, uncertainty and nervousness. Not this girl, she walked in, owned the room and made herself a spot on the blanket – but without any dominance or aggression issues. She doesn’t seem to feel the need to chase the chipmunks and squirrels that believe they own the backyard, and was relatively uninterested in the Opossum that my two dogs found “oh so interesting”, as it tried to find a way out of the fencing – when I called her, she walked away from it. She will be an easy transition into anyone’s home (with or without resident dogs) and has tons of kisses waiting for her forever family. |
