| UPDATE 6/15/09 - We are early on our 6 month update but with summer coming we'll be busy with activities and such... Gavin is doing GREAT. He is a happy, healthy pup. He's adjusting with our family beautifully and we just love him. He is a 62 lb lapdog and just loves being close to us and our daughters. His "puppyness" is starting to fade. His chewing has subsided some and he is fully house-trained so he's on the right track! We still work with him on the things he learned during obedience classes and he knows what he's SUPPOSED to do but won't if he doesn't feel like it!! If he feels like running around the backyard he will NOT come to us when called... he gets within 2 feet but then runs off - we are working on that! He loves to ride in the car and behaves wonderfully. He is still skittish around strangers so we've been taking lots of field trips to the pet store and to the park so he can continue to build his confidence with people. UPDATE 4/10/09 - Gavin (Marvin) is doing great. He's been with us now for 3 months and is adjusting very well. He is still a playful puppy but is starting the learn the times that his playing is appropriate and the times that it is not. He has stopped most of his accidents inside the house and on those rare occasions that he does have a potty problem it is usually our fault for not picking up on his signs. He innately knows when he needs to run. If we let him outside and he wants to let loose he runs enormous circles until he's tired and then flops down in a heap. We are still working on some of his commands - "come" is not one he cares to respond to!! We are planning on starting another round of obedience with him - this time outside to acclimate him to his surroundings and other people/dogs. He is still deathly afraid of adults (he's fine with kids). If people come over he runs and hides. Hopefully this behavior will relax as he grows and finds out most people are good. He's very lovey and could not be a sweeter pup! UPDATE 3/10/09 - Gavin (formerly "Marvin") is doing great. He is an energetic, strong young boy. He is already up to 50 lbs and eats like a horse! I think he's going to be on the larger end of the scale for boxers. People comment everywhere we go about how handsome he is - he has gorgeous markings - and how big they think he'll be. He's been getting along with our 12+ yr old lab quite well. When our senior has had enough "play" he lets out one stern bark and Gavin backs off - he's very respectful. Gavin has been to the vet's office twice for simple shots and did wonderful. He's still VERY hesitant of people (adults mostly) but is starting to learn people are generally good. He went through 6 weeks of training and is doing well retaining the things he's learned!! We can't wait until spring/summer so we can take him out more and get him acquainted with other dogs and people. UPDATE 2/10/09 - Well, we couldn't have asked for a better puppy! We adopted Marvin back at the beginning of Jan and he's fitting in just fine. We changed his name to Gavin and he seems to be liking it. He is super sweet and our two young girls just adore him. He's very patient with them and let's them sit/crawl/roll all over him and he doesn't move a muscle! The only two minor issues we've had to deal with were potty training and a bit of chewing. He was mostly potty trained when we picked him up but was having some accidents during the night. Since he's gotten used to our schedule and learned exactly when he'll be going outside he's been doing much better. He was also chewing a bit (understandable since he's only 6 months old) so we got a crate and have been using it while we are away from home and it has helped tremendously. He is selective about his chewing - he's picked one corner of the couch cushion and went to town on it but he is not interested in chewing other things (and with two small children and TONS of stuffed animals around there is no shortage of things to choose from!!). Gavin has started his obedience classes and is learning new things as fast as we can teach them to him. He knows sit, down, come, off and is definitely learning "no". He's still a bit shy of new faces but is learning to trust people. We'd rather he be reserved about meeting new people than to jump all over them anyhow. Overall, he's doing GREAT and we feel fortunate that he chose us!! 1/10/09 - Marvin has been adopted! 1/3/09 - Marvin is a very cute 5 month old purebred boxer puppy. Bought from a local breeder and turned in due to divorce. Marvin does not seem to have a very good start as he is very fearful. He loves being with other dogs but definitely has some reservations about people. He is getting better every day. Marvin has some of the biggest paws I have ever seen. He is going to turn into one big dog. We will get to see Dr. Matt this week and get him neutered and up to date on his shots. We will update you as we get to know this very cute boy. |
