| UPDATE 12/14/09 - Hazel continues to fit in nicely with our family. She is almost full grown according to the vet. She weighs about 35 pounds.
Hazel was spayed about a month ago. She recovered very quickly from her surgery and did not like the doctor's orders of no walks for seven days. Hazel has learned to walk with me very nicely. She doesn't pull much and mostly stays level with or behind me. We enjoy some very long walks together on the weekends but during the week can't do much because of the short days. Last week she tried the treadmill, and after an initial fear she walked along calmly. The kids and Hazel play together well, but roughly. We have been trying to encourage calmer, gentler play but neither party is interested. The kids throw loads of snowballs at Hazel and she responds by stealing their hats and mittens and running triumphantly around the yard with them flapping from her mouth. My big problem with Hazel is that she STILL doesn't "get" house training. She has had 2 "accidents" in the past two days and I am starting to get pretty annoyed by it. We will continue to work on it. I will update Hazel again in a couple of months! UPDATE 10/18/09 - Hazel continues to grow like a weed. She weighs in at 31 pounds now. She isn't that tall, though, but instead quite squat. Hazel just finished Puppy Kindergarden. She has learned a lot and is just starting to acquire some manners. She still jumps on new people who come into our home, but manages to stay down for the family. I have been bringing Hazel for longer and longer walks to accomodate her increasing energy. I am concerned about the pending time change, as it will make daily walks impossible. I introduced her to the treadmill last week. She was scared at first, but within 10 minutes she was walking along tentatively. I think that she will learn to use it quickly. My kids play with Hazel all of the time. She isn't bored very often. She is rougher with the kids than I would like, but I think that she will calm down soon. Hazel still is not completely housebroken. She has figured out how to open gates to escape from her space, so that she can go pee in the kids' bedrooms. This is my only problem with Hazel. I can never seem to catch her in the act; she is quite sneaky about it. Hopefully we will put a stop to this unwanted behavior soon. Hazel has discovered the joy of the woodstove. She lies in front of it and soaks up its warmth while the October snow comes down outside! This little pup is definitely part of the family. She fits right in with us and is growing into a nice dog! UPDATE 9/12/09 - Hi! Hazel has adjusted to our home very well. She is a darling puppy. Everyone absolutely adores her. Hazel came to us at 8 weeks, she weighed 8 lbs. She is now 12 weeks old, and has just about doubled her weight! She is fat and happy. Hazel began her puppy classes three weeks ago. My husband takes her each Saturday morning, and they have learned a lot together. In fact, they are there right now! I hope she comes home tired. She missed her walk yesterday and was beastly last night and this morning becasue of it. Hazel loves going for walks in nice weather. In the rain, she tries to crawl into the lower basket of the jogging stroller. The first time she did it we all panicked. We had no idea where she was, and we began searching the surrounding woods. Then we saw her peeking out from the stroller, snug as a bug in a rug and away from all of the rain! Hazel likes to chase our chickens occasionally, but does not fixate on them. She ignores them mostly. She chases our children, too, but they like it more than the chickens do. Since we have 3 small children and parents working alternate shifts, there is always lots of noise and action in the home. Hazel likes all of the commotion and contributes her fair share. But I have to say that she has been a pretty easy puppy so far. She is not destructive or loud. She does ALWAYS have a shoe on her bed with her, but she doesn't chew it. She just lies next to it. Sometimes she has two or three. The easiest part about Hazel is that she wants to be with us more than anything. She isn't interested in running off or doing sneaky stuff; she just wants to hang with us. Hazel has visited the vet two times. She is in good health, but did need a series of worming mediation, and flea treatments. I think both of those issues are fully resolved now. The first day we had her we found 2 fleas on her, and got right on it! We haven't spotted any since. We are so happy to have adopted Hazel. She fits in with our family perfectly. I can't wait until she is big enough to go on really long walks and hikes with me. Now she takes turns riding and walking with my 5 year old. We always get lots of smiles and waves from passing cars when Hazel is in the stroller and my daughter is the one walking. I think that is all- 8/13/09 - I was adopted today 7/15/09 - Savannah is a such a little toughy. She is a solid strong little puppy. She is so cute. Love watching her play with her siblings. She does this cute little growl that just cracks me up. She doesn't even know she is doing it. She does that when she is dreaming too. Too funny. She started on her first mush feeding today. Made with puppy food and formula mixed to consistancy of baby food in a blender. She LOVED it. She is still getting her bottles of formula in between mush feedings. She is such a happy little puppy. I took a picture of Savannah and my huge boxer Tyson kissing??? or sizing each other up lol. Tyson is great with the pups. Savannah weighs in at 3.1 pounds. 7/3/09 - This little girl, along with her brothers and sisters, were set to come into rescue with their Mamma. Sadly, before we could get them up here, she was killed. So there they were, two weeks old and helpless, so Auntie Dee and Aunti Liz became surrogates. All of them were a little weak when they came to us and made everyone a little nervous. But they're started to thrive and have really taken to the bottle feedings. We'll keep you updated as they start to grow and develop personalities (which means learning to escape and get into trouble, right?) We know that Mom was a Boxer but we don't know who dad was, so we're calling them "Boxer Mix". But, pictures speak louder than words. |
