UPDATE 3/8/10 -   Shaq AKA Spot is doing great! He has developed a pretty regular routine which includes waking up at 6:00 everyday and taking his boy to school along with mom or dad. His favorite toy is the laser pointer. He will chase after it for hours if you let him. He is a healthy eater and preforms his "happy dance" every time he knows food is on the way. Second to eating, his favorite thing to do is ride in the car. Getting him out of the car is a feat. He would just sit there all day if you let him. He is the ultimate "co-pilot".
Spot has thrown both us and our vet for a few loops over the past year. He has been battling on and off with a weak immune system that has resulted in several infections. We have been dealing with each as they appear and hope to be at the end of this ordeal with his last round of antibiotics. The vet says he is the perfect patient. The last time he was there he was given a complimentary EKG, because there was a vet-student there who had never preformed one, and Spot is such a good sport when it comes to tests. The good news is Spot's heart is great!
To make a long story short.... SCBR has yet again connected us with a great dog! We are so very thankful for all that was done for our baby. Please pass on to Cyndi (RI), his fostermom, that all is well and he is a very happy and spoiled dog.

3/14/09- Shaq was adopted!!!!

NOTE: Due to my hearing impairment, I will need a home with another dog, a fence and someone that is home more often (ex: at home parent, work at home, work opposite shifts, retired, etc)

1/14/09 - Our newest visitor Shaq arrived early on Sunday morning 1/11. He is a very well behaved gentleman. At age 5 (best guess from our vet) he seems very content to have a warm safe place to spend his days. He is a very solid 82 pounds, but very gentle and sweet. He was surrendered to a local shelter with no background information. All we do know about him is that he is deaf. Our vet did notice quite a few scars and one broken tooth that leads us to believe he has not had a very comfortable first five years. He is a little hand shy but has absolutely no aggressive traits at all. He has bonded with my 11 year old son and has interacted beautifully with anyone he comes in contact with - even my big old Maine Coon cat - Shaq did not have any interest in the cat at all other than a little sniff to say hello. The cat and dog slept on the same bed last night, so the cat's approval speaks volumes of Shaq's easy going personality!
Shaq walks to school with us every morning & gets very excited when he sees his leash. When I sign the command for "sit" he does so & waits for me to put his leash on. He pulls a little on the leash, but not so much that my 85 pound son can't control him. We'll work on better leash manners with a little help from another of our foster moms who is a trainer and lives nearby! He also loves to go for car rides!
Shaq visited my son's after care program last night and met quite a few kids ranging in age 5 to 11 and he was fine with them all, excitedly wagging his nub. He gravitated to the adult leader  though & promptly sat on her feet so she had no choice but to give him attention! He loves belly rubs and happily flops down to entice you to rub his belly.
We went for a vet check last night & Shaq was diagnosed with infections in both ears. The vet and the techs were amazed by how docile he was as they dug yucky stuff out of both ears to test. He also has some minor skin infections - he has very deep folds in his face and his new family will have to take a little extra care to keep those folds clean and dry. We were given some medicated wipes which should do the trick nicely and this boy does not mind one bit when it comes to either his medicated ear drops or the wipes - it's as if he knows we are trying to help him. He is truly a gentle sweet soul.
He also has a touch of kennel cough. He was initially prescribed an antibiotic but then had 6 seizures in the 3 days he was on the antibiotic. Once the antibiotic was discontinued the seizures stopped. He has been seizure free since arriving here and he is taking Robitussin DM for his cough. The vet says the cough could just be viral anyway, so we'll give it a few days and keep a good eye on him.
Since he is deaf it is imperative he is kept in a fenced in yard or on a leash since he can't hear you call him. He is very sensitive to vibrations though, so to get his attention you can stomp on the ground or turn a light on & off. He does know basic sign commands for sit, stay and come - and wags his nub like crazy when you give him the "good boy" thumbs up sign! I'm confident that with a little training (for human and for Shaq!) he is capable of much more - he is a guy who aims to please & is one of those velcro pups who loves to be with his people at all times.
Lastly - he is perfectly housebroken and has not had a single accident since he arrived. In fact, the first 2 mornings I took him out, he didn't have to go. He waited until our walk to school, so if you like to sleep in, Shaq is definitely the boy for you!
