| 11/6/09 -
Hey everyone, this update has been a long time coming.
Sweetie is finally fit as a fiddle!! She is 100% heart worm free. She is spayed. She has had 4 tumors removed.
The vet felt they were all benign fatty tumors, not mast cell, like we originally thought. YAY! Sweetie came through all the procedures like a champ.
I'm trying to think what I can tell you after all this time that would describe this very special girl. Sweetie is a gentle soul, she get's along with the 4 other dogs in this house like a gem. She picked a spot in the pack and settled in. She has had no desire to move up in rank. She has been quite content. Sweetie and the other dogs are fed in their crates to avoid any kind of food issues. She is not possessive over toys or treats. She will destroy most stuffies right away. She seems to have a blast shredding the stuffing. I have one toy that a friend bought her that has survived, it's a stuffed Opossum. [Sweetie brought an opossum into the house a few months ago. ( yeah, that was a blast...) She wanted to share the wealth with her foster mom. The opossum was playing 'possum and escaped unharmed. (I'm not sure my nerves escaped unharmed) ] Sweetie is not a dog who jumps or is overbearing like some younger boxers can be. She waits her turn, waits to be called is patient and loving. I had some health stuff going on with one of the resident dogs here. It was terrifing and really touch and go for a while. I was clearly shaken and Sweetie knew it. She would seek me out, sit down right in front of me and look right into my eyes. I took the time to tell her what was going on with her foster sister and what I was feeling. You know, she sat there the whole time and listened? It was truly some experience. She is very gentle and very intuitive. HAAAAAAAA ... she was an in house therapist that night...she is a great listener She knows the routine here very well and the consistency has built her confidence. I have a timer on my coffee maker. Every night I set up coffee for the following morning. I find sweetie putting herself in her bed. She goes right into her crate and waits for her night time biscuit. This is a nice easy going girl. She will stand by the door to let me know when she has to relieve herself. It took her a while to get on schedule with the potty training..... but she has it down pat now. Sweetie is older then we originally thought. I have to say in my experience with the breed she is about 6 years old. She has some overgrowth of her gums (that is cosmetic) and she has some scars from the tumor removal, but they give her character. If you looking for a nice easy going girl to ad to your home and a dog that will compliment your other dogs this is the girl for you! HA...not to mention the money she'll save you on therapy!! :)) 4/4/09 - Our Sweetie Pie is finally healthy enough to be able to undergo her spay and bump removal. It has been a long period of healing for Sweetie and she has come through her heartworm treatment with flying colors and has tested NEGATIVE. This is a very special little girl who will be ready for that very special forever home as soon as she has recovered from her spay. She is the most obedient, loving and non-demanding cutie that I have met in a very long time. Sweetie is a dog's dog.. if there is a chance to get a nice snack from the garbage she's on it. She also loves paper towels and toilet paper. Sweetie still has some puppy qualities floating around. She gives up her new tresures right away when caught in the act :) There is nothing I ask of her that she does not do promptly. ( I wish my own dogs listened so well) lol Please get your applications in... she won't be around long!! A big thanks to everyone who supported this girl financially and with their love and prayers! WE did it folks!!! :))) 3/9/09 - Our girl got a clean bill of heath today. She will have an interceptor tab on Friday to kill off any remaining microflaria.. She will go in next Thursday for spay and tumor removal. Dr.King was thrilled about how great her heart sounded! The HW issues is done. This girl has been so lovely and patient with the other dogs.... especially the puppy. She will be an asset to any home. She loves to snuggle and is a couch potato. I just wanted to personally thank everyone for the support on this girl. Heart Worm Treatment was very expensive. We were able to cover most of that expense with your donations. We're up to the second part of this girls treatment the tumor removal. Sweetie will have 4 that need removal and while she is under we will have her spayed. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Please keep those donations coming we're almost to home plate!! 1/9/09 - I just love how this little one sleeps.... she is either upside down or in between things like a puppy. As you can see her front legs are in between the love seat and ottoman.lol Sweetie is just a gem. she is just so easy going and loves everyone. The only things I've discovered that she is not fond of is the snow and going outside when it's dark. She needs a lot of encouragement to get those little tootsie's wet!! Due to my vet's requirements, she will go for a retest on the heartworm in the next month or so... if she is negative and has recovered well, she will then be spayed and have those Boxer bumps removed. She will be ready for her forever home shortly! 10/24/08 - Sweetie had a rough day. man ,the second heartwrom injection was awful. just plain awful. I assisted in holding sweetie for her last treatment. she was in terrible pain that lasted through much of day. honestly, not to be to graphic but she was screaming and pacing. This treatment is the only was to cure Heartworm. I asked the vet to give her a dose of pain medicine. Sweetie got a dose of Medicam and it did not relieve any of it.. it was a healthy dose too. I was told she is not to have ANYTHING else. no more Medicam.no aspirin nothing. she just has to get through it. It's heart breaking to watch them hurt and not be able to help them. the only thing I could do for her was to pet her and try to get her to be still. she is still hurting this evening but she is not crying anymore... and neither am I .lol lol My dogs we so upset that she was hurting.. the anxiety in the house is finally calming down. they have been walking up to her sniffing and kissing her . Dogs are just great :) The worst is over I hope..she ate a little bit of her dinner and is resting on the love seat her favorite spot. Keep all those good vibes coming.. this girl is a trooper!! 10/23/08 PM - Sweetie is home safe & sound. Passed all her pre -op testing with flying colors. She had the first Heartworm treatment today.... she will have the second tomorrow at 1:30. she needs to be kept quite, meaning she needs to be as still as possible for the next couple of weeks. so none of those heartworms break up into her lungs. pretty serious stuff :( she is clearly uncomfortable ......it effects their muscles, it's a lumbar injection. This is the scary part of doing rescue. I like the ones that come in real thin.we fatten them up and they go home.. The ones that are so loving and so sick always scare me. I just want them to be ok :))' she was a real trooper today.. Dr.King spoke about just how stoic Sweetie was during the treatment. keep all the good Boxer Vibes going. 10/23/08 AM - Sweetie is with Dr.King. She is having a chest X-ray and a look see at her belly. I have a concern about what feels to me to be a hard mass in her stomach........ekkkk if all those things are clear and her heart is not damaged by the Heart Worms..... Dr.King will begin the first round of Heartworm treatment. this is very painful for a dog. depending on how well she tolerates the treatment that will dictate when she gets her next injection. please have good thoughts for the Sweetie Sweetie pie pie.. 9/12/08 - Sweetie girl is a pip. I just went food shopping and picked up a rotisserie chicken. I put the chicken on the bottom shelf of the fridge still in it's dome plastic container. I was putting other stuff away and all of a sudden out of no where SCRAPPY is walking away with the chicken, she is not spilling a drop, still in the plastic container!! She looked like a waiter walking across the room with it!! she was just looking for the right spot to serve it to herself!! lol the other day I took out a pork chop and salad to take for lunch.. put it on top of the microwave and headed to the shower.... when I came out... SCRAPPY got me again!! she opened the tin foil and promptly ate the chop bone n all.... got to love the survival skills :) By the way, she answers to Sweetie, Scrappy Doo and skinny butt! :) 9/11/08 - Miss .Sweetie is a girl rescued from South Carolina. Another local rescue observed her sitting there in a cage. they could not leave her..... she was thin, frail and CLEARLY in need of RESCUE. It's important that I tell you she weighed in at 38 lbs when she arrived. She is now 55 Lbs and going strong this girl rises to the occasion and is a survivor!. During her long journey from SC to NJ.......someone along the way gave her the name Sweetie, and it stuck! This girl is really a sweetie, wants nothing more then to fit in with my pack of 4 dogs, have a few good meals, some hugs and yes some yogurt:) Sweetie Pie loves her yogurt. As you can see by the pictures she has several Boxer bumps. Generally when we get a rescue dog in that is so physically compromised we have blood work drawn to get heath profile and we test for Heart Worms. So, the initial Blood work was drawn, Heartworm test is Positive. We also had the vet do a fine needle aspiration on one of her bumps. That test reveled we are looking at a Mast Cell. In speaking with our vet about a game plan for the sweet girl......DR.King's recommendations are as follows......We need to find out the grade of the Mast Cell Tumor or tumors. The easiest was to do this is something called a punch biopsy. We can use a short acting anesthesia to obtain the punch biopsy. The purpose of this procedure is to grade the Mast cell Tumor......Stage I..... treatment is surgical removal with wide margins......... prognosis is good. Stage's II or III not a good Prognosis...... even with tumor removal and chemo. prognosis is poor and life expectancy is 6 months to a year. This is a horrible illness that in later stages has a tendency to run like wide fire. If the grade is I the next step is to take a chest X-ray. This will show if the Cancer has spread to her chest or is in fact contained as a grade I mast Cell. The chest X-ray also shows the level of damage if any to the heart and lungs from the Heart worms. We believe her level of microflaria (adult heart Worms)is low and very treatable if the Biopsy results indicate she is healthy enough to under go Heartworm treatment. SCBR is always willing to go to any lengths for our rescue dogs. We like any other rescue find ourselves stretched to the max financially. We need you help financially to treat this girl. The initial estimates just for the above diagnostics begin at 700.00. This includes a 15% discount from the attending vet and part of the initial consult paid by the foster home. If she is Sweeties Treatment needs to be micro managed by the best vet we know in the NJ area. There is just no other way to care for this girl if she has a shot of making it. If the grade on the tumor's is a I......... we are golden health wise and can being treatments. We cannot do this without your help. Please remember SCBR is 501 C 3 and all donations are tax deductible. Here is a link to our donations page We take Pay Pal, money orders or Checks made out to SCBR and sent to: SCBR PO BOX 525 WOOLWICH ME 04579-0525 Please include Sweetie's name in the memo area Thank you for any thing you can contribute.... even $5.00 helps us...... help Sweetie. I will update her progress and test results regularly |
