| UPDATE 8/23/10 - We cant believe its been a year already. My how the time flies when you have a great companion. Zelda has really come into her own in the year we have had her. She has been through a new home and parents, thanksgiving, christmas, and a deployment where it was just her and megg while i was gone. And after all of that we still are leaning new things about her. Such as shes not a big fan of swimming in a lake. I took her to the lake and was holding her in the water, needless to say that she wanted out. so she swam to the dock and stared at me in the dad, what are you doing. Ever since i got back she seems to want to wake me up around 730 every morning. I think shes grown attached to me which is a good thing. Hopefully some time in the future we can adopt a brother or sister for her to have a constant playmate, but for now its just her weekly playdates with friends dogs. Thats all for now, Ill update again in a few months. Thanks SCBR for a great companion. UPDATE 3/10/10 - We have had Zelda with us for about 6 months. She is still doing well. She is enjoying the nice weather we've been having lately. She is a good listener, and does what she is told. She came with us to my husbands base for his deployment. She did very well with all the noise and activity. She is due to go to the vet soon, she loves it there! She is a good watch dog while my husband is away on deployment, I feel very safe with her here with me. UPDATE 11/28/09 - Zelda got to experiance her first thanksgiving with us and she was very excited. We all went over to my inlaws house where there were 3 other dogs (2 mini schnouzers and 1 malamute husky). She first got to meet one of the schnouzers and she had already met the huskey so that wasnt too bad but she couldnt meet the other schnouzer because hes not that frendly. She waited like a good girl in the living room while we all ate but then, Grammie gave her lots of treats for being good. We also learned that she liked the stuffed duck that makes a quacking sound, this is news to us cause she doesnt really play with any toys she has here. But she wouldnt leave it alone, so guess what santa doggie is bringing for her. A new duck. She continues to ride well in the car and thinks that we pay tolls for treats from the nice people. One of the tolls didnt have treats and she gave my wife a look like, hey wheres the cookie for me? Obediance school has a few more weeks left because the trainer got a new dog a few weeks into the class and extended it for all of us for free. Shes a teachers pet there, very well behaved and learns quickly. She also gets lots of practice at home reenforcing all of the new things she learns at school. I think that is all for this update, more to follow next time UPDATE 10/31/09 - Zelda is doing great with us. She is the teacher's pet at obedience school. She loves to train with us at home as well. She loves to be around people. We take her everywhere we can with us. She has become quite the cuddle bug lately. She had fun with her dad raking leaves this weekend. She thought the piles of leaves were pretty fun to run into! Zelda has made a great running companion as well. We are still very happy with her joining our family. 8/20/09 - Zelda has been adopted! 8/11/09 - Tonight I had a real conversation with FM. I managed to get both front feet into her lap and then my head and shoulders followed. I put my nose just about at her chin and started talking to her. I tried to tell her that tho' I do love her, I want a home of my own. I want someone to cuddle with all the time. Can you imagine, I was cuddling with Rusty the cat just before I went to talk to FM? The kitty is nice, but she keeps head-butting me. That is no way to treat a dog! There is no dignity in cuddling with a cat! FM pets me and scratches my ears and tells me how pretty I am. And I am a very pretty girl. I got all excited and started really talking back. I mean I actually did some woofing and such and FM seems to understand. At least I think she does. Then Fenway came into the room and we had to break up our "love party".because he gets sooo very jealous! If you would like a very conversant pup, then I am your girl. 7/19/09 - Hey folks, I've been here in foster care for 4 whole months! I'm a beautiful girl, I love to walk and do well on leash, I love to play with people as well as other dogs and did I say, I am beautiful! It is lots of fun to wrestle with Rose and Fenway and play tag in the yard. I am very clean and sleep all night. I won't even get up until YOU are ready to get up. I'm not fussy about my food and eat what is put in front of me. I don't even eat in the crate much any more. I'm a good girl and would like to be your girl. Please, Please come and get me, soon! Love, Zelda 7/14/09 - Zelda is pretty obedient and the times she has escaped into the unfenced yard (my fault), she came as soon as I spoke to her. All she wants to do is 'be with you'! She loves attention like most boxers, and is ready and willing to play. She can be a bit enthusiastic, so you do have to be careful. This morning I was out "weed-whacking" and my whacker is a pretty strong rig. Fenway kept a very respectful distance, the other were all in the house. Zelda was respectful, but only about 10 feet away. As soon as I shut it off, she was right by my side. "HELPER"! I did not destroy her "salad bar". She loves to chew on fresh grass and doesn't get sick on it. Just getting her greens. 6/27/09 - Zelda loves to have someone talk to her and will talk back! She becomes very vocal at times, especially at meal times and will talk up a storm. Her conversation is very quiet woofs with an occasional quiet bark. She even moves her mouth without making any sound, at times, all the while staring into your face. Like most boxers she loves to watch facial expressions and will "key" off of them. She bounces around and knows when it is play time with people. She loves to "help" in the yard and follows me around when I am working inside the dog fence, which is often. She has been down cellar to the workshop and the saws and sander don't appear to bother her at all. It is only when I have something in my hands that she feels any threat at all. She has settled down a lot and is very ready to go to your home. 6/17/09 - Boy have I been bummed! :-( F. M. said someone called about me, but they never called back. I really thought I was going to have a home of my very own. It is ok here, but still......... Anyway, I'm feeling a little better since it stopped raining and we have all been out to play. Nothing like a good run in the yard to get a girl's spirits back up. F.M. laughs at me at meal times. It seems funny to her that I run around the room and get all excited when it is time to eat. Boy, am I quick to dive into the crate so that I can eat alone! I love the crate! I love my food! I'd love a nice home and a family of my own!! Are you it? Love, Zelda. 5/27/09 - That is right! FM says that I am beautiful, and I am! My fur is all growing back in and I am looking really nice. My alopecia is going away and fm says it is probably because I had that "spay thing" done, so now I am not stressed and my 'mone levels are settling down. Whatever that means. FM says she is going to take more pictures of me because I am making so much progress. I really like to eat in my crate. I am more comfortable there and lots less nervous than if I eat outside of the crate. I wish I could tell FM what I went through before I came here. She says she thinks I was 'bused, and I guess I was. I'm happy now, so that is what counts! Your friend, Zelda 5/20/09 - I've just got to tell ya, I am a great hunter. A Turkey hunter! After all, it is Turkey season, and I am not one to be left out of things. After breakfast, FM (foster mom) sent everyone outside to take care of nature's business and we are all very obedient pups. That is when I spotted a nice Hen Turkey in our yard. I had it cornered! Then Sam, Rose and Fenway got under foot and let it get a chance to get a run! It actually ran away and then flew over the fence. I really wanted a fresh dessert after breakfast, and those other pups let her get away. FM even took my souvenir tail feathers away! I really wanted them to just get a little taste of Turkey. I'm really disappointed. I would make a wonderful hunting companion, so how about it? Adopt me, the Great Fawn Hunter! 5/9/09 - Hi, my name is Zelda. Yesterday didn't start out too good at all because foster mom didn't let me have any breakfast. Later, I got to go for a ride and that was ok. We went to this place where there was lots of dogs and people. One of the people was a "Doggie Doc" or at least that is want foster mom said. She thought I was a very nice girl, big and strong, said that I wouldn't have to have any more puppies after that day. So I guess it was a lucky day. Foster Mom left me there and later I had a nap. Much later, foster mom came and got me. I was kind of sleepy and only had a very small supper and then slept some more. I cannot imagine what made me so dopey feeling. All I wanted to do was sleep! Today I am wide awake and started on a special treat. I get a lump of peanut butter or cheese whiz on my food. I am told that is my pay for taking my pills. I feel fine, but they, the doggie docs, said that I have Lyme. Not bad, just a little, so have to take pills for awhile. I can be adopted now and my pills can go with me. Foster Mom said! I will miss playing with Fenway and Rose, but if you like to take walks, go for rides or just plain snuggle, then I am your special girl. Remember, the name is ZELDA!! (FOSTER'S NOTE: Zelda is now spayed. She's heartworm free, but has Lyme and is on meds for a month, which can easily travel with her if she is adopted. She also has some Gingival hyerplasia, which is common with Boxers, and Dr. Matt did remove a couple of the larger lumps from her gums. It was noted that she does have a mild heart murmur, but it was not a problem for her during her surgery.) 5/6/09 - Zelda is coming out of her shell! She has found the big plastic tub in the back room and has been bringing out stuffed toys. She loves to lug them around. She has also taken to rolling around on her back and just plain being silly. Her other problems still plague her: she is very quick to dart out of my way, as if afraid she will be hit; is terrified of the long handled crank that is used for the skylights, and is in general pretty skittish. It is going to take a lot of love to get this girl over her nervousness, but in the meantime, she still loves to be cuddled and hugged. I did try her upstairs for the night with the gang, but she wasn't comfortable. So, for the past 3 nights she has been uncrated, and sleeping on the love-seat in the family room. She seems to appreciate comfort, as most boxers do. I'm going to call today to attempt to make her spay app. 5/1/09 - Zelda is a very nice dog! She crates very well, doesn't need to be, but when the door is opened, she is out as if she had been shot from a cannon! There are times when I sense that she has suffered some abuse in the past. Often times when we are in close quarters, kitchen or bathroom, she will actually bump into stuff in a effort to get out of my way. It is almost a 'panic' sort of move. I am in the habit of looking before I move my feet, so it really isn't a problem, but she sees it as a problem. She is getting along well with the crew here, but would like to chase the cats. I tell her "no" and she gives me that look that says, "but kitties are made to chase"! She is very responsive to "no". All this girl wants to do is please someone. She tries so very hard. She has a very good recall. 4/22/09 - Zelda gets along fairly well with the Log Cabin Crew, except the cats. She has not yet met them! They are sort of "stand-off-ish"! Zelda loves to be paid attention to and would enjoy being a lap-dog. She is quite the love seeker and if I sit in an easy chair, her front feet are in my lap, if I allow it. She is pretty responsive to commands and obeys pretty well. Last night when I fed them, she ran at full speed into her crate! I was afraid she wouldn't be able to stop in time and would actually hit the wall. However, she did stop, turned and was ready for supper! She is quite the "snorter", but that is because her nose is so short. She does lots of huffing and puffing and snorting compared to the other dogs. This is a very nice girl. 4/19/09 - Zelda is finally beginning to settle down just a bit. She is pretty much a 'bundle of nerves and energy' when she is out of the crate. She is trotting the yard almost non-stop and can't seem to sit still. So much energy!! The dog door was no problem and she had that down in about 20 minutes. This girl is smart! She gets along with everyone here. Fenway drums those front paws impatiently while he waits for me to open her crate! She plays with him, but is pretty rough. He just seems to come back for more! He is in love! Zelda has stopped jumping up quite so much, recognizes that the spritzer bottle is usually near by(used to curb her over-enthusiastic activities), responds very well to her name, as well as come and no. She loves it out in the yard and tho' frequently checks in ("what are you doing"), spends a lot of time outside if out of the crate. 4/17/09 - Zelda is a beautiful rich reddish fawn and white girl. She is somewhere between 4 and 6 years of age, and is VERY muscular! She is big through the neck and chest and tho' not tall is quite "hefty". It would appear that she has had at least one litter of pups in the past and very possibly two. Her manners need some work as she would like to jump on folks and she is a bit rough. She appears to be coming into heat and will eventually be spayed. She also seems to have a bit of hair loss which is probably "seasonal alopecia". Nothing serious! She was quiet in her crate all night, went outside and took care of business this morning without any problems. She ate a small breakfast, but didn't polish her dish like most do. Zelda appears to be a bit on the heavy side and I think with the exercise she gets here in the yard with my dogs, she will drop a couple of lbs. I am also going to restrict her diet just a bit, work a bit on leash training and maybe the jumping. I hope she likes carrots! |
