| UPDATE 6/18/10 - Beans is doing great. He is getting better at not fixcating on the cat. We are working on getting into the garbage, inside & outside. It seems like he has always been here, I don't know how we would be without him. Thank-you so much for letting us adopt him! UPDATE 3/17/10 - HI Guys, Beans is doing good. The training classes are going very well. Getting him and the cat together is a work in progess but I belive we will get there. My Golden Dino are the best buds. Beans loves to ride so I take him with me when I do short trips. We are saving to get a broken tooth fixed that Beans has. Other than that Beans is in very good health. Both Beans and Dino need to lose a little weight, about 5lb.each but they have that SAD EYE look down pat; My husband is a sucker for those eyes. UPDATE 2/16/10 - Beans has been with us now for a month. He has bonded with our Golden Retriever. They don't share toys very well and an arguement breaks out once in a while. He is well behaved but he spends a few minutes in the Time Out Cage when he bothers the cat. Eventually, he will learn the cat is not a chew toy and will leave him alone. This has been his only behavioural problem. He has begun obedience training and is doing ok. He gets along well with other dogs in class. He went to the vet the other week. He has a broken tooth that will have to be pulled in the future. Other than that, he has a clean bill of health. His hearing problems do not seem to be much of an issue as he is very alert to his surroundings and what is going on. Every night he tries to climb into bed with us and we tell him NO. He makes his final attempt around 2AM. He figured it out that we are too tired to argue with him at that time. UPDATE 1/21/10 - Beans likes his new home. He is getting along very well with Dino, the golden retriever. The cat, tigger, is not overjoyed with him though, but hopefully they will bond. We are working on it. Beans is scheduled for obedience training on Feb 9th. The trainer has worked with "deaf dogs" before. Beans should be a great student. he is very smart. He is learning to behave properly when strangers come to visit. We bought him a blanket coat to where when he goes outside. He even has his own food dish table, All in all this has been a great experience so far. Once we get him to leave the cat alone, all will be well. On the next update we will have some pictures of him in his new home. 1/15/10 - Beans has been adopted! 12/8/09- Beans is doing great here in NY, he loves it outside and loves to run the yard. We got a little snow and he likes to shovel it with his mouth while running lol! He is best buds with everyone here, but definitely misses Ciarra. He is doing well on his prozac and is going in for a check up to make sure it is not bothering his liver. Beans has become my personal lap dog.... yes a 70 lb lap dog, I don't mind usually because it reminds me of my Lilly, he is a snuggle bunny and still a big puppy. He loves attention and is very playful. Beans has an appointment Friday to get his blood work done to check his liver and get his refill on the prozac so we will update you some more when we find out he is aok! Keep watching for more updates, Beans is steadily looking for his forever home will you be the one? What a wonderful Christmas present he would make! 11/11/09- Hi Beans here wanting to update you on what has been going on in my life! Well, first of all Ciara left me she got the call and now has her forever home. I miss her! Don't get me wrong, I love it here at my foster home but I want a home of my own! I am a wonderful pup and I don't do anything wrong... well, ok, I am a pup, lol! I enjoy a little garbage when I get the chance, and sometimes I counter surf, but foster mom is working on that with me. I think I am doing good, cause I get lots of treats!!!!! Well, I think I will go outside and run in the yard for awhile, so if you're interested, give Leann or Julie a call and insist on me!!! 10/12/09- Hi Beans here, just wanted you to know that things have really settled down here at the nut house, lol. Foster mom calls it a nut house because she has 5 dogs of her own and keeps taking us fosters in! I have been a very good boy for foster mom and she says so a lot. Although I can't hear her, I see her lips moving constantly. She is always talking! She finally figured out I LOVE playing with balls. I absolutely love all kinds of balls, big ones, soft ones, and hard ones. I keep playing with the other foster Ciara. she likes balls too! I am still waiting for foster mom to get THE CALL for me. I guess it means someone wants me if she gets the call. I sure hope someone calls soon, cause I really want a forever home instead of a foster home. Don't get me wrong, I loved each and every one of my foster homes but...... I am ready to settle down and be in a forever home of my own where I can live happily ever after..... you know a place all my own with maybe a playmate like Ciara to have with me every day?? Now that would be great. I get along with all kinds of dogs. There are other boxers and German Shepherd mixes here. I dont get to play with those little dogs next door cause I might be too rough with them. Foster mom says I am a BIG, handsome, man and need to be with dogs my size. I am kind of rough at times, but am mellowing out a lot with the help of a pill called Prozac. My foster mom says it is an anti-anxiety pill to help me be less exciteable. I take it with cheese and sometimes peanut butter. yummmmm! Well, I have rambled on long enough for now. Foster mom is waiting to press the send key so she can get back on the computer and Ciara is waiting for me to play, so I gotta go. Bye for now! 10/10/09- Well Beans made it to Niagara Falls, NY where he will be fostered until he finds his forever home. He has made friends with all 6 dogs here that's my 5 and Ciara, good golly that is 7 dogs in my nut house lol! Beans seems to get along with all types of dogs although i dont know about little dogs cause my goodness he is a lot bigger in person than he is in pictures. My house is in total chaos right now as he wants to play and mount everyone (dogs that is) Well i will send in another update as soon as things settle down here at the nut house. 9/18/09 - Beans is doing well. He got his stitches out and is running around just like a puppy. I have not had any problems with him. NO counter or stove surfing. I believe that his separation anxiety is not there with the other dogs with him. I can leave him alone with the dogs and come home to no problems. All the dogs are usually sleeping when I walk in. He sleeps by himself in the living room at night or with my son. He does love the kids I watch but, he does slobber and lick them. We are still working on that. He sits, lays down and stays when the door is opened for someone to come in. No issues with him trying to escape. He has been a good boy these days. I kind of will miss him when he goes to his forever family. 9/4/09 - Beans had his neuter yesterday. He is doing great. He is a little more playful today of course. He is doing well. My vet said "His hair is growing back and he looks really good." It will take a little time for it to grow in thicker but, it will and white boxers do not always look the greatest due to their color. The redness is gone in his face and under him. It is a light pink now how it should be. I just need to continue the spray and the once a week bath with the medicated shampoo. That is not much to handle. He has tolerated his medication which is a low dose. He has stopped the counter and stove surfing in the last week. The water bottle does wonders with him except all the dogs ate the last one. Need to put it in a high place. The most important thing is that he is not a whopping 67 pounds. The vet said no more weight gain for him. He has filled out enough. So I need to watch the treats a little. LOL. My son has bonded with this dog like crazy and he is ok with younger children. He just likes to lick them a lot. I have found that if he licks to much I put him outside. When he returns he does not do it. The cage is out of the question. It is too much stress for him and me. He does fine out of it. No mess in the home and he has not had an accident in weeks. Everything looks positive at this point. Will update again soon 8/20/09 - Beans is doing great now. He is calming down quite nicely. Usually around 8pm he wants to be left alone and is resting. I give the medication around 3pm. He knows how to sit, stay, come, and we are working on down. He is very food motivated. His skin has cleared up and you can no longer really see his back bone anymore. He is 55 pounds. I will get another weight on him when he gets neuter on September 3rd. I attached some pictures so please post and see what happens. Thank you for everyone's help. 8/12/09 - Beans went to the vet yesterday and no more Mange. He will continue the meds until the bottle is gone. He also is now 55 pounds. He is now ready to get neuter which will be on September 3rd. He is doing ok. He still chases the cats though and that is a problem now my cats are scared to come out the one this morning relieved herself on my floor while being chase. I have tried to block the stairs but, he keeps jumping the fence. I will have to figure something else out like put a door up or something. Other wise he has been pretty good yesterday and today. 7/19/09 - Beans did have his vet appointment on Tuesday of this past week and we found that sadly the mange hasn't cleared up completely and he has lost weight. We have changed his food and feeding schedule in an attempt to combat both issues. He is continuing to have his bouncy puppy personality and energy, NOTHING slows him down and we are continuing to work with the vet to get him better. More updates to follow as he continues on his journey. 7/3/09 - Beans has another vet appointment next week to hopefully have his manage cleared and be ready for adoption. He is working on manners since he is still a pup and each day he seems to improve. We have been working on how to great someone when they come in the house with polite manners (i.e. four paws on the floor) and we have seemed to master that skill in the last week. He has tons of puppy energy that he loves to use running around the yard chasing whom ever will play with him! Get you applications in folks he will be moving fast when the vet clears him! 6/11/09 - Beans also had a vet check on Tuesday and we received the disappointing news that his mange is still not cleared up so the meds will continue. He continues to do well and has really brought the house to life with his puppy antics. We are continuing to work on hand signals and leash manners that are improving slowly but surely, He is going to make a great addition to a very luck person's family when he is ready. 4/22/09 - Beans is doing great in his new foster home after some growing pains he is learning how to adj to the crate and even sleeping in the crate when everyone is out and about. He is working on his hand signs and commands and is improving my the day. The manage is looking better by the day and he is continuing to improve. More updates to follow as he continues on his road to recovery. 04/15/09 - Beans has made a move to foster with a new family in NJ do to some health concerns with his foster mom. He is now staying in Barrington, NJ. He has only been here for a few days and is just trying to get settled in. More updates to follow as he continues to progress. 4/5/09 - Beans has had a busy weekend. He has moved a bit north in NJ on Friday 4/3 to a new foster home where he is the only dog & therefore will have a little more one on one attention as well as an 11 year old skin brother to play with. Beans is a real sweet boy who just needs to learn some basic commands and also learn that his crate will not be a permanent place of residence but just a safe place to rest. He is extremely fearful of his crate. We have decided to make the crate a place he associates with good things, so today his dinner was served there (with the door open). After about 15 minutes of him contemplating whether he was more hungry or afraid, hunger won out & he went in & ate. The door was open the whole time. We are going to continue to work in this fashion, letting him associate positives with his crate. A fellow SCBR volunteer came by today & did a brief training session with him. Beans was fabulous, quickly learning the signs for sit/lie down and stay. He now will have to sit before being rewarded with food/treats or even going outside. He seems to be a quick learner. After the training session Beans was rewarded with a nice bath, first a nice shampoo followed by his medicated shampoo for his mange. The mange is definitely improving and a big thanks to Tracy who came over on a Sunday and opened up her grooming salon for our Beans. She was taken by his sweet nature. Beans has been wonderful with my son, and seems mildly curious about my cat, but not aggressive at all. Beans enjoys running around with my 11 year old son and has lots of puppy energy. He likes chasing balls but also loves to snuggle. I think Beans will be one extra special boy once he settles in to a routine and learns what is expected of him and how to communicate. More to come as we get to know him! 4/1/09 - Welcome Mr. Bean! This guy is just the sweetest! He's been hanging out, surveying his new digs and seems to approve :)) He will gradually be introduced to some of the resident dogs here after he has several days to decompress and feel secure. He welcomes their attentions through his crate and is wiggly and happy to see them. This is one happy boxer boy who just soaks up any attention that he can. He loves Ryan and just about turns himself inside out trying to get as close as possible. lol Bean hasn't always had the kind of attention a baby boxer boy needs so he is lapping it up!!! He isn't crazy about his crate right now, but he does go into it and gradually he will understand that it's a temporary resting place not a permanent residence. Bean has a wicked case of demodectic mange and has begun his treatment with Ivermectin and antibiotic and some soothing baths. He actually seems more comfortable already and is not chewing at his legs the way that he was when he first arrived. Demodex can look so nasty, but the treatment is easy enough to accomplish and Mr. Bean should be sparkling in no time at all! It can take a little while for the skin to heal completely, but it will and Bean look like a brandy new boy :)))) Check back for more updates on this charming boy... |
| Note** Because I'm deaf, I would do better in a place with a fenced yard and another dog from whom I can take my cues. I also like people around, so if you were home most of the day, that would be great! |
