UPDATE 8/30/10 - Duke is fitting in to the household routine as if he's been here the whole time. He loves to sleep on the couch on his back with his feet straight up in the air, and boy can he snore!! He's been to the local dog park, and had the opportunity to play with several new friends. He also has a new best buddy, Oakley. Oakley is a chocolate lab, and just play for hours on end!!! Duke starts obedience training on Sept 18th, so we'll keep everyone posted to how he's doing.
Duke is learning to walk on a leash now, and is doing VERY well!! He can sit, lay down, and we are working on shake.
That's all for now!!!

8/22/10 - I was adopted today!

Duke deserves a big fat gold star on his picture this week. Actually make that two. There's a lot of good stuff here.  I am SO proud of the progress he has made in such a short time. I think with a little bit of consistent training everyday from his new family, he will be a stellar dog. He's already super duper handsome, now he's getting his manners in check too. I can't get across how much he likes to please and I kind of get the feeling he kind of likes the one-on-one attention...I know for sure he totally loves the good boy belly rubs and treats he gets when he listens. So far we have the food aggression issue under control and it really didn't take very long - just working at it everyday, every meal. We even had supervised bullysticks for everyone tonight and there was not one single solitary problem. I am also very happy to say his baby gate hurdling days are close to over. Part of getting Duke to stop challenging my boy over food was to separate them and body block him every time he got that look in his eye; or every 30 seconds - which ever came first. Bonus there is he's loosing the interest of jumping over the gates, even when I'm not directly in front of him. A firm OFF and he will get down. The jumping on the front door is on the decline too. That's a big relief for me. I was wondering how much stress the glass insert could handle. Another job well done for Duke is the counter surfing is minimal now. Last bit of bragging here - the cat situation has even seen some progress. Maybe it's the attention, or because he was neutered - who knows, but he hasn't been charging the gate while barking like a maniac when he sees the cats at the top of the stairs. Now just a bit about his cuteness and winning personality....he catapults himself across the rug while on his back and looks extremely happy with his joker size smile. When Duke wants to be super close to you, he climbs along the back of the sofa pillows and curls up behind your neck and puts his head on your shoulder. OK, its probably not the best thing to let him do but when you see that big sweet face looking back at you, its hard to say no.

I introduced Duke to Marvin and Sasha and all went well. They played together for hours on end, running to every corner of the yard but Duke has to really build up his endurance to keep up with Skinny-Man Marvin. Funny story- the other day the dogs were out in the yard and a bunch of horses were trotting down the street. Well, big burly Duke must have been taken by surprise at the sight of them and came bolting through the dog door. Until then, he had a hard time coming back in the house. Fear as the great motivator I guess...
Duke really likes having another dog/dogs around but he is just learning how to live with them. They all play, share toys and sleep together like best buds but he needs to learn not to challenge my boy over food. He doesn't give my girl a problem but I think that's because he has a crush on her. Sadly for Duke, it's unrequited. I do keep them separated at feeding time but because Duke loves to jump over all the gates in the house, tall and average - any separation is pointless. I believe his food issue its totally a fixable with diligent training, and I did see noticeable improvement tonight. Its been a four day exercise but I think we're finally turning the corner. Of course, this wasn't without him fighting me blocking him every 30 seconds but I was proud of him for finally listening. This crazy boy actually thought he could outsmart me and beat me to the other gate to jump over while the dogs were eating! I only had to move 5 feet to the left; he had to turn around and go through two rooms to meet me. After 10 minutes or so of tonights' game, he finally sat down and stayed down. Duke's a bit stubborn but does like to please...loves to hear what a good boy he is, so happy to see you when you come home and is SOO protective. He's just such a big big love. Give him a tasty meal [LOVES food], scratch his belly, throw him a ball [LOVES toys too] and let him snooze on a comfy couch or bed and he's happy as a clam. But no cats please.

I picked up Duke Friday AM from his family. Unfortunately his owner is having health issues and can no longer take care of Duke but he was loved and very well taken care of. OMG! what a handsome big boy he is and still has a lot of growing to do. Just from the size of his head, I'd say he's going to be on the large end of the scale. I love the big lugs - they have the best floppy jowls to lay tons of smooches on and Duke loves to be loved. His 5 inch tail can't stop when you tell him what a good boy he is. Add a little ear massage and he's putty in your hands.
Duke is textbook Boxer. Intelligent, stubborn, big goofy clown, such a love bug and quite the protector. I lost count of how many times I pulled him off my counters. I was told he was crate trained but he wouldn't go in even with a few yummy bribes - it wasn't until I climbed in that he decided to join me. I had to try it - I was running out of treats and my guys had been in their crates all day. Right now he's grumbling at me because he's in his crate- supposed to be going to bed but he's not ready. I got a very sweet, surprisingly gentle hug and a sloppy ear kiss. It's a busy night at the bar across the street so he barks every time he hears a new voice. Wow! what a booming bark he has. Someone was running up the street and I'm sure Duke took a few years off the man's life...you can't see him very well at night but you can't miss that bark especially when it sounds like its chasing you ;) Too early for introductions to my crew so more to come on this big, sweet baby as we get to know him better.
