10/11/10 - Duke has now been with us for over a week.  His post-neuter complications have been improving and there is a great chance he will not need surgery.  However, he is still on antibiotics and still wearing his e-collar and will be until his wound completely heals...hopefully soon!!  Duke and I have had the house to ourselves this weekend as we all had a trip planned (Dogs included) for this 3-day holiday weekend but due to Duke's condition, him and I stayed back and my husband and 2 dogs went on vacation.  Over this past week, Duke's appetite has arrived...this boy loves to eat!!!!  He's already gained one pound!  Duke is a very smart boy and is eager to please....all he asks for his some love and affection and that includes a lot of belly rubs...his favorite!!!  He seems to know basic commands and is very well-mannered.  As excited as he gets when it's time for dinner...he already knows to go into his room and sit to wait for me to put the bowl of food down.  After he goes out and does his business...he goes straight for the fridge for his piece of cheese, then he sits and waits for it (he picked this up only after two times).  For the first couple of days Duke was here, my husband thought Duke's vocal cords were damaged because he literally did not make a sound...at all!  Then the night that my husband left, I was sitting at the computer and Duke let a little whimper...why?...he wanted some love!  Now, every morning when he wakes up he lets out a little whimper to let me know..."Hey FM!  Can you get up..I gotta go out lady!"  This boy is so full of love and kisses and, at times, seems to think he is a lap dog...at 67lbs...not so much!  I've been trying to teach him that's okay to just lay next to me and put your head on my lap....I don't need your entire body on me...he's getting it..sort of.  We'll keep working at it.  Duke is an absolute pleasure and whoever adopts this wonderful, handsome boy will be lucky to have him!

Just want to give an update on Duke's post-neuter complications.  He was at the vet Monday morning and was diagnosed with a scrotal hematoma, the fluid had all backed up into his scrotum and was quite painful and uncomfortable for him.  The doc gave him some painkillers and some Baytril and wanted to re-check today.  Yesterday the swelling seemed to go down slightly and Duke's appetite increased...no more picking at this food...he ate the whole bowl..yay!  Well...at some point last night while we were all sleeping, his scrotum burst.  It was so backed up with fluid that it wanted to escape...luckily Duke already had a follow up appt this morning.  The doc says it was probably a good thing that it burst because it a lot of the pain and discomfort that Duke was experiencing  should now go away, and the hole he has in his scrotum is all dead tissue so it does not hurt him.  Unfortunatley, it's pretty ugly looking and it's going to be a bit messy for the next 24 hours until all the fluid can drain.  He's already been taking Baytril so that will prevent infection.  He also still has a good deal of inflammation surrounding the entire area which hopefully will begin to go away. He has another appointment set up for Friday morning to check on his progress.  The ideal situation would be that whatever residual swelling and inflmmation that is still there will go away and the hole in his scrotum will begin to heal itself and he can finally recover.  Worst case, he may need his whole scrotum removed.
During this entire ordeal, Duke has been a trooper and the most easy-going patient all through his discomfort.  He's had to wear an e-collar for the past 3 days and still counting, he is taking all his meds, lets me clean his wound and still gives us his boxer wiggles whenever he sees us...he deserves a gold star!!!

So day 2 update on Duke III.  After keeping his bowl with his dinner down for awhile...he finally ate it.  He does not seem to over eat, only eats what he wants and then finishes it off when he's ready.  He slept right through the night with no issues.  We introduced him to his foster brother and sister today.  We did one at a time starting with Ginger (female).  They did so great...Duke took well to her many attempts to jump all over him to play.  Then we brought Ollie aka "jelly belly" (male) out to meet Duke....after about 5minutes Duke rolled over and gave Ollie belly!  So it seems that we now know who the dominant male dog will be in the home and Duke is really just so calm I think we can relax with worrying about any power struggles.  Then we had all 3 dogs together outside...went great.  Duke did well with the 2 dogs being on top of his every move and semi in his face at  times...which I corrected immediatley.  It really appears as though he wants to be part of the pack because he would follow the 2dogs whenever they weren't following him.  Duke keeps impressing me with every new thing that he is introduced to.  I can't say it enough...he is just fabulous!  I will keep sending updates as he progresses.

10/2/10 -
Duke has been doing great since he got here a few hours ago and this is what I have found so far.  He has not formally met his foster brother and sister yet only thru glass or his crate but when he does see them he seems to be completley uninterested in them, however, he did meet the resident cat and was great with her, no signs of aggression what so ever, just wanted to sniff her and move on!  So he would be fine in a household with cats.   He is has had no accidents in the house so it seems to be housebroken, which is great!  He doesn't appear to get upset when I leave him alone in his room for a little while, he is very quiet and waits patiently for me to come back to check on him.  He is fabulous on a leash, walks right along side you, no pulling at all.  He is a big love....he is totally obsessed with belly rubs! We took a little snooze together this afternoon, it was a long trip for both of us and he snuggled right up to me and only woke up once or twice to give me a few kisses.  Duke really seems like a sweet and terrific boy who deserves a loving forever home to give him the love and attention he deserves.  I will keep you posted as I find out more.

Duke is coming to us from a local shelter we work closely with. The shelter did his neuter and brought him up to date on shots. They even did the first leg of the transport. Once he settles into his foster home, they'll introduce you and we'll find out what it was about this guy that had the shelter going out of their way for him.
