UPDATE 8/22/10 - Lucy has an exciting first week in the Doggett household. We received a great orientation to Lucy from Debbie and her family on Friday night. Lucy seemed to warm up to us after the car ride home and settled in nicely for her first night. Saturday through Tuesday were uneventful. She took a quick liking to Theresa and would not leave her side. As for Patrick, she was a bit more wary. Our only concern over the first couple of days was her unwillingness to go to the bathroom. She was not having any accidents in the house but she was only having a bowel movement maybe once a day and she was urinating only every other day. She was only willing to go to the bathroom when she was off the leash. Fortunately we have a nearby park where she had the freedom to roam and seek out a place to her liking. Her appetite was fine during this period. She is getting two meals a day and wolfing everything down provided we sit on the floor with her while she eats. She was easily startled by any l  oud or sudden noises so we tried to steer her clear of such caustic stimuli.
Our drama came on Wednesday when Patrick tried to take her for a walk and once he took her off the leash to go to the bathroom she bolted after being started by an umbrella. Lucy proceeded to embark on a 5 hour joyride of the neighborhood. Despite the best efforts of 6 of our friends we could not corral her. Fortunately, she came home of her own devices around 11:30 pm. She gave us quite a scare and we were thrilled to see that she was safe. She did not seem at all fazed by the experience, which was a positive and it was great to see that she knew her way home and was eager to return when she was ready.
Thursday we bought her a retractable leach and made the vow to get her comfortable going to the bathroom on the leash. She still continues to only move her bowels once a day and urinate every other day but she is beginning to go while on the leash so hopefully we will have no future misadventures. Thursday was also the first day that Lucy wagged her tail when she saw Theresa. No such luck with Patrick. We continue to be more and more excited each day as she begins to exhibit more of her personality as she grows more comfortable with the two of us.
Lucy had a vet appointment on Friday and was given a clean bill of heath other than the recommendation that she could stand to gain about 5-10 lbs. As a result she is now getting 2 cups of dog food twice a day per the vets recommendation. She weighed 49 lbs which indicates that she has put on weight since she was with second chance boxer, which is a testament to the great care she was getting with Debbie and her family. Lucy was also micro chipped while at the vet.
Sunday was Lucy's first trip to the dog park. While unwilling to play with the other dogs, she was happy sitting and watching the other dogs. She was willing to sniff the occasional passerby and we are hoping she will get more comfortable with each encounter.

8/12/10 - I was adopted today!

7/30/10 -
Wow - I can't believe Lucy is still with us. She is the sweetest little girl. She is doing very well with us and continues to blossom. She has the sweetest demeanor, a real angel.
Funny story, she has started to run in our fenced in area and when she chases my husband or me down the hill her little butt goes sideways because she is running so fast! It is so funny looking.....but she is just having a fun time. She doesn't jump on you when she catches you either.
She is such an easy dog, she does not have the typical boxer energy which has been really enjoyable. Don't misunderstand me, she loves to have a romp in the back yard or to go for a walk but when she comes in she finds her own little spot to settle into.
Lucy has almost mastered "Sit" and she waits (almost perfectly) in her crate while her food is prepared, placed on the floor, and then all the dogs are released. She can learn anything with patience and kind words.
Get your applications in, she won't be here forever!

7/3/10 -
Little Lucy is finally starting to feel better. She has had some stomach upset which resulted in diarrhea. We had her outside running the other night. I think Lucy would like a family that does not expect her to have the typical Boxer energy. She has been with us for two weeks already and spends a lot of time happily sleeping.
Lucy?s day starts off by waking up with us and having breakfast. Then she will get to go back to bed while we get ready for work. She then goes outside into a fenced in area to do her business and have some play time. She is then crated until the kids wake up. She mostly spends the day sleeping and goes outside a couple times during the day. Once we get home from work we try to take the dogs outside for some playtime before dinner and clean-up. Then back outside. Lucy goes to bed about 8:30 at night. She always wants to know where you are and will follow you from room to room.      She continues to have a sweet personality but is a bit greedy when the dogs are getting some loving and being talked too. She likes to push her way right up front and get the most love. I feel that she would be wonderful with children; however, I don?t know if she has the energy to keep up with them. What might be good for her is Grandparents with some visiting grandchildren. That way she can enjoy the kids but also get some beauty rest. She also will need people that will be very patient with her. She has had no obedience training and she is still very skittish.
The animals in this house are not allowed on the furniture or the beds. Lucy has NEVER tried to get on any of these. She continues to sleep in our room at night and does not snore and is very well behaved.
Lucy is still a little shy of men. A raised voice (especially a male voice) will have her running for cover. She seems to have no problems with women, and seems to always be on guard with men. This causes her to show signs of being very nervous and/or skittish. She just needs to learn to trust the people she is with. She just has the most loving personality. She needs time to be able to trust and let that personality shine.
She was really scared to go outside at nighttime and would not let my husband take her out for bedtime potty. We were unsure of what she was scared of?.the threshold of the door or the dark. We eventually went and got one of our Boxers and took them out with us. This seemed to get her over whatever she was scared of. A think having another dog in the house may be useful for her. She is definitely not a dominant dog.
Lucy wants what everyone wants out of life........She wants someone to love her and treat her well!

6/23/10 -
Little Lucy has been with us a few days now and I can not express the "cuteness" of this little package. She will be a great addition to any family. She stands at a whopping 25" floor to top of her head and is weighing in at 43 pounds. She continues to be unsure of things and noises around her in day-to-day living in a home; however, she is also learning that she is safe and is able to rest quietly on the floor or on a dog bed and the things or noises will not hurt her. She doesn't seem to be a very active boxer but she could also be tired from all of her stress from the last few weeks.
We still have not heard Lucy make a single noise. Hurry up and come and get her before she learns to bark from the resident dogs.....They bark every time the wind blows!!!
Lucy has not slept in her crate at night since her first night with us. She is sleeping with the three resident dogs in our bedroom. She is living with 1 female and 2 male dogs and there has not been one issue between them. Lucy's calm and gentle demeanor is part of the reason this merger has went so smoothly. She seems to enjoy the other dogs company, but is not playing with them, or with toys yet.
We had a picnic at our home yesterday and Lucy was brought out to meet some people after the party died down. She went person to person and just stood there and let them pet her. Everyone was amazed at how sweet and calm she was. Hurry and get your applications in - I am telling you she is a beautiful girl.

6/18/10 -
Lucy has arrived. She is just so "cute". She meet the three resident dogs and so far all is good. They are all lounging in the kitchen with leashes on just in case but she seems very tolerant of the boys and with my Lucy (yes, 2 Lucy's in the same house) there seem to be no issues. She is very scared and I am guessing that she has never lived in a house before....all noises seem to startle her; however, she has been through a lot and needs some time to settle in and learn the rules and schedule of this house. We had a rough night sleep last night, she does not like the crate and we could hear her trying to break out.....but one firm "NO, LUCY" and all was quiet......until the next hour. I have a feeling that this sweet little girl will not last long.....get your applications in quickly for her.

6/13/10 -
Lucy is a 3 year old little girl who was surrendered this weekend by her owner. She's staying with a temporary foster until she can hitch a ride to her permanent, temporary home. We'll be telling you all about her when we get to know her. Stay tuned!
