| UPDATE 1/25/11 - Sammy is doing very well. He did great visiting all of my family at Christmas. He got a squeeky blue duck from my 2 year old nephew which he loves and we play toss with around the house. It was really cute how excited Sammy was when we got home. He settled back into our routine very quickly. He is being very good about going into his crate, since he gets extra-special treats when he is in there. We have started going to obedience classes, and we are both doing well. He is ahead of his classmates, being 2 years old and already knowing sit, down, come and I am getting better at using a clicker.
I discovered the tips of his ears have poor circulation and so one ear edge has been giving him problems with bleeding in the cold weather. He is now on some medicine to improve the circulation and hopefully it will heal up soon. The vet suggested I cover his ears in the cold, and while it looked hysterical, I couldn't get him to put up with anything over his ears for very long. With the cold weather, he will put up with boots (so I don't have to constantly warm up his feet) but a coat was only acceptable at -10F. He is still fascinated by the bathroom and likes to break in and visit while I shower. He loves being involved with everything, especially any cooking going on. He is a great big sweetie who is snoring on the sofa beside me as I write this. UPDATE 12/27/10 - Sammy is settling in very well. We have a routine down at home and he is keeping up his obedience well. He has been good in the house, not getting into things, unless it is just too tempting. My last dog was too short to counter surf much, so I have had to make adjustments. He has started to sniff counters and will steal food off the table if he is alone in the room too long, but I am working on that. He has met the neighborhood dogs and has played with my neighbor's dog a few times. He is not totally happy in his crate yet. He doesn't complain when he goes in his crate with a treat, but about 10 minutes later (after much of the treat is done)he does start to complain and rattles around until he settles down. I have had to buy him boots since it is so cold and they put down so much salt in my neighborhood. He adapted to the boots after one walk and will put up with me putting them on. Next I will probably need to get him a coat if the very cold weather keeps up. I have traveled to Canada to visit family for the holidays and he has met the 8 adults and 5 kids (14 months to 11 years) in my family with no problems. We held off and let him sniff around and get to know everyone slowly and it went very well. Very soon the 14 month old toddler was holding onto his nose to walk past him. He quickly figured out the toddler throws food off her high chair so that was one of his favorite hangout spots. Everyone loved him and he was gentle and friendly with everyone. He has been good at my parent's home and very comfortable. My brother's family gave him a squeaky duck toy and he lugs it around, squeeking it like crazy. He is a sweet dog and it is surprising that it has only been a month! He is fitting in well. I am taking him to obedience classes in January. UPDATE 11/30/10 - Sammy is settling in quickly and it already doesn't seem like only a week I have had him. I am getting us both into a routine and he is accepting it quickly. He was worried about letting me out of his sight for the first few days but is gaining confidence. He will now go into the yard without me and doesn't get upset when I go to the bathroom or basement without him. He does have this habit of coming in the bathroom when I brush my teeth and looking at me as if I am doing the strangest thing. He is still barking a bit after I put him in his crate, but it seems to be more complaining then anxiety. I have established we each sleep on our own beds at night, but he has figured out which is my side of the sofa and is sleeping on it now. He already has great manners and came knowing basic commands; he sniffs but does not counter surf, walks nicely on a leash and is working on come, sit and lie down. I am taking him to obedience classes in January to work on not jumping up on me and to improve the other commands. He is enjoying our walks and has met many of the dogs in the neighborhood and been calm and friendly. He is a bit more cautious when meeting people but warms up to them quickly, especially with treats involved. He loves chasing a stuffed toy or playing fetch with a ball and I am having a lot of fun playing with a dog again! Thank you for Sammy! 11/23/10 Samson has been adopted! 11/14/10 - Samson arrived at his foster home yesterday and is settling in very nicely. He is a big boy and I am guessing that he weighs 70+ lbs. He is a beautiful 2 year old neutered fawn boy with white markings with natural ears and a docked tail. He would like to thank his transporters for helping him get into rescue. Samson is an owner surrender as they just didn't have time to care for him anymore. He lived with three children aged 8 and up and another dog in his previous home. He was very nervous about all the changes but as soon as he met one of his foster dog sisters, he became very happy and playful. He is for sure good with other dogs. With the change that I watched yesterday, I would say that he would like to be with another dog for sure. He is eating kibbled food twice daily mixed with a little warm water and I believe his foster dad gave him a touch a can this morning to help getting him to eat. He has played in the fenced yard today and loves to run. He has had no accidents in the house so I do believe that he is housebroken. Such a nice dog as he gently takes treats and knows a few commands which he doesn't mind performing for a treat. I will check with previous vet to get some offical paperwork on his vaccination history. He will do well in foster care and he will make some lucky family very happy. |
